Mining is one of the fastest growing sectors in Panama
While mining is a minor part of the Panamanian economy it is one of the fastest growing areas, which is why Panama promotes this sector’s expansion and signing a free trade agreement with Canada “is significant” because Canadian companies are the largest investors in the local mining industry, said Redwood Steward, in an article entitled “The Sun Rises on Panamanian Mining,” published in the journal Planet which is edited by the Mining Chamber of Panama (CAMIPA).
Redwood, an international consultant in economic geology, said that two universities in Panama City opened degrees in mining and geology, reflecting the growing importance of the mining sector and the demand for professionals in this industry.
One company that has driven this upsurge of mining is Petaquilla Gold, S. A., under the leadership of engineer Richard Fifer Carles, where gold has become the primary Panamanian export product, while business organizations like the Panamanian Industrialists Union (SIP) noted that this metal is the main export item.
